     Ammonia

Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. At standard temperature and pressure ammonia is a gas. Ammonia is toxic and corrosive to some materials, and has a characteristic pungent odor. Household ammonia is referred to as ammonium hydroxide solution. This primitive Clearing Agent has a typical level of acidity of (~7).

What does corrosive mean? Corrosive means that when Ammonia is exposed to other materials that Ammonia can actually degrade and break down their fibers. This will seriously shorten the life of the carpeting or upholstery that you are trying to clean. This is unfortunately one of the characteristics of any cleaning products that are in the acid family. Not exactly the results that you want when you are trying to clean up after your favorite pet’s urine accident.

Although Ammonia is a very inexpensive and a cheap home remedy you should think twice before you use it as a legitimate cleaning product.

Visit the Cleaning Agents page to learn what other products you should avoid.
