     Clean Leather Like A Professional

If your pet has urinated on your leather furniture or any other leather article you should review this page carefully before attempting the cleaning yourself or turning the job over to a professional cleaner.

Carefully review your leather maintenance history. Read the labels of the leather products that you have used. If your ingredient list includes oils, waxes or sealants then you have used a leather conditioner or a waterproofing agent.

Leather conditioners always contain some type of oil and sometimes contain waxes to polish the leather. Leather waterproofing products always contain some type of oil, waxes and sealants.

Both the leather conditioners and the waterproofing products will clog up the pores of the leather. The waterproofing products go even father using sealants and even polyurethanes to completely seal the pores.

If you have only used the leather conditioner a couple of times you still have a good chance of cleaning pet urine from the leather. If you have used the leather conditioner numerous times or you have intentionally used a waterproofing product then your chances to successfully clean the leather from pet urine are seriously diminished.

There is a substantial amount of leather furniture that is manufactured using bicast leather. Bicast leathers are actually a split leather that had a polyurethane coating applied to the surface. The polyurethane coating acts as a waterproofing barrier so this type of leather furniture may not be appropriate if your own pets. Urine clean up may be exceptionally difficult to impossible.

Using the wrong leather maintenance product has consequences. If you own cats or dogs the best approach is to avoid the use of leather conditioners and waterproofing products on that expensive leather. Get into the habit of reading those product labels. Leather conditioners and waterproofing products are not intended to clean.

You will need the following cleaning supplies. A plastic bucket, gloves, clean absorbent cotton towels, black light, liquid leather cleaner. If you do not own a black light you can purchase one at your local hardware store.

Shop for a water based leather cleaner that does not contain any oils, waxes or sealants. That way when your pets have an accident it will be relatively easy to clean the leather item using a liquid leather cleaner that is designed for urine removal.

Locate the urine accidents using your black light.  If the urine is still wet press a clean absorbent cotton towel on the urine and hold it there until it is saturated with urine. Place the soiled cotton towel in the bucket. Repeat this process until there is no more urine to absorb.

Carefully prepare the leather cleaner according to the manufacturers instructions. Spray the leather cleaner thoroughly on the soiled areas. Make sure you purchase enough leather cleaner to complete the job.

Wait for the leather cleaner to dry. Double check with your black light and reapply the leather cleaner to any areas that need special attention. Don't make your situation worse review the dry cleaners page before beginning your urine removal project.
